Raj BJP chief leaves stir abruptly; Cong takes dig
Jaipur, April 30 -- State BJP chief Madan Rathore's conduct at a protest organised by the BJP 's women's wing against the defeat of the 131st Constitutional Amendment Bill has sparked a controversy.
According to party workers, the torch procession was organised at Jaipur's Amar Jawan Jyoti by BJP women's cell president Rakhi Rathore, former chairperson of the state Women's Commission, Suman Sharma and others.
"Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma and state president Madan Rathore were also scheduled to join the protest. Although CM could not make it due to his busy schedule, Rathore reached there at around 7:30 pm," said a party functionary who was present in the rally on Tuesday.
A video surfaced on social media on Wednesday morning, in which Rathore was seen rebuking women at the rally and then leaving abruptly. In the video, he was heard asking the women to maintain a proper distance with each while walking. After a few while, he said, "Baat samajhti nahi hai, mai jaa raha hu" (If you fail to understand, then I am leaving)
The women leaders present and party general secretary Bhupendra Saini were also seen trying to stop him and pleading with him to refrain from leaving abruptly due to the presence if the media, who were recording the march.
Addressing the matter, state Leader of Oppposition, Tikaram Jully, said, "BJP state president Madan Rathore's behaviour to the women was not only shameful but also insulting and unacceptable. BJP's mindset is always extremely narrow and insensitive to women and their honour."
"Although the BJP keeps talking about 'Nari-Samman', the reality is absolutely opposite. This duplicity in their character has now been exposed. It is evident from the way he left the procession by insulting the women that there is no respect for the women and their dignity in the party. Such insult to the women is not acceptable at all," he added.
Rathore did not respond to HT's repeated requests for comment.
However, BJP general secretary Ekta Agarwal defended Rathore's actions as part of his "guardian-like approach".
"Rathore ji was concerned about us. There was a lot of torches and therefore it was necessary to maintain a specific distance with each other. Otherwise, there could be an accident. Three years back, a BJP worker died during a similar procession after his cloth caught fire from a torch accidentally," she said.
Agrawal, who was also present in the event, said that Rathore was only asking the women to maintain a 10-feet distance with each other.
"But many of the women could not understand his command, which disappointed him and he left. But he never insulted us. Rather, we are happy to see his concern. We are happy to have such a caring guardian like him," added Agrawal....
