Raj, Haryana finalise key points of Yamuna project
Jaipur, June 24 -- Chief minister Bhajan Lal Sharma held a high-level meeting in Jaipur on Tuesday with Union Jal Shakti minister CR Patil and Haryana chief minister Nayab Singh Saini, finalising key points of a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) on the Yamuna Water Project.
The meeting also took forward discussions on the long-pending Kishau Dam project, with officials indicating that contentious issues among the six states involved have now been resolved and a separate MoA for that project will follow soon.
In a departure from the conventional canal-based distribution system, the Yamuna project will deliver water through a pipeline network - a move Union Minister Patil said would ensure better conservation and wider, more efficient distribution. He said the project was being advanced with a long-term, effective approach in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "Jal Hai Toh Kal Hai" (water today ensures a tomorrow) vision of inter-state coordination on water resource management.
Patil added that the Kishau Dam project would benefit Rajasthan, Delhi and Haryana, among other states, and expressed confidence that the coordinated effort between states would pave the way for resolving future water disputes as well.
Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma called the Yamuna project extremely significant for Rajasthan, particularly the water-starved Shekhawati region, saying it would prove transformative for the area's socio-economic development and improve the standard of living for lakhs of residents. He reiterated that the state government, in cooperation with the Centre and Haryana, was committed to getting the project on the ground at the earliest.
The Chief Minister noted that under the Prime Minister's leadership, several inter-state water projects pending for decades were now gaining momentum, with positive resolutions emerging on long-standing disputes. Rajasthan's demand for Yamuna water, he said, had been pending for years and was now seeing concrete progress.
He added that once implemented, the project would benefit farmers, industries and the general public alike, strengthen water management infrastructure in the state, and support the broader national goal of Viksit Bharat 2047.
Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini said state governments, under the Centre's guidance, were working with commitment to ensure water access reaches every citizen. He said the Renuka, Lakhwar and Kishau projects would together benefit people across Rajasthan, Delhi and Haryana. The meeting also discussed plans to harness rainwater and channel it to Rajasthan.
Senior officials from the Union government, Rajasthan's Water Resources Department, and the Haryana government were present at the meeting....
