Preparations for local body, panchayat polls begin in Rajasthan
Jaipur, July 27 -- With the Rajasthan government laying out a roadmap for local body and panchayati raj elections before the Rajasthan High Court, both the administration and political parties have begun preparations for the polls, officials aware of the matter said on Sunday.
The rural development and panchayati raj department has authorised district collectors and sub-divisional magistrates (SDMs) to initiate the process of determining category-wise reservations for elected representatives in panchayati raj institutions. An order issued by Dr Jogaram, secretary and commissioner of the department, empowers district collectors to determine reservations for Zila Parishad and Panchayat Samiti wards, as well as the posts of Pradhan, in their respective districts. Similarly, SDMs will finalise reservations for Gram Panchayat wards and Sarpanch posts within their jurisdictions.
However, the reservation matrix will be finalised only after the submission of the report by the OBC Commission.
The state informed the High Court that the commission will complete its survey and submit its report by August 5, in compliance with the court's July 15 directions. The reservation process, including the draw of lots, is expected to be completed by August 15. Political parties have also intensified their preparations.
