Jaipur/Ajmer, Sept. 20 -- Ahead of the elections for mayors and chairpersons of urban local bodies in 305 urban bodies across the state on September 21, allegations have surfaced in several places of abduction and intimidation of newly elected councillors, alongside reports of political leaders engaging in altercations with police, people aware of the matter said on Saturday. In Hanumangarh district's Sangaria, the Congress moved its councillors to a camp in Punjab ahead of the municipal chairperson's election. The situation escalated after a missing person complaint was lodged concerning two newly elected councillors, Om Prakash Swami and Sahil Swami, prompting Sangaria police to visit the camp at Friday late night. A heated exchange reportedly took place between Sangaria MLA Abhimanyu Poonia and police officers. Poonia accused the BJP of misusing government machinery and alleged that false cases were being used to pressure councillors. Police recorded the statements of both councillors, who said they had gone to Punjab voluntarily. Congress workers on Saturday staged a sit-in outside the Sangaria police station under Poonia's leadership to protest the police action. Police said they had acted in accordance with the law regarding the missing person complaints. Leader of the Opposition Tikaram Jully alleged on social media that political pressure was being exerted on the families of Swami and Sahil Swami and attempts were being made to implicate the councillors in false cases or forcibly take them away. In the 35-member Sangaria Municipal Council, the Congress has eight councillors and the BJP two, while 25 Independents hold the key to the election of the chairperson. In another case, a complaint was filed in Tonk district, alleging that newly elected Duni Municipal Board Ward 34 Congress councillor Archana Badgurjar was abducted while travelling to file her nomination for the chairperson's post. According to the complaint , Archana was staying at a BJP camp ahead of the election. The complaint claimed that she left the camp after failing to secure the party's support for her candidature. It alleged that when Archana and her husband reached the Sarwar toll plaza in the Kekri area, their vehicle was stopped by Vikram Gurjar, a resident of Dhokaliya in Uniara, and a group of around 20 to 25 others, who forcibly took her away. Her family claimed it had since been unable to contact her since. The complainant urged police to register an FIR, trace Archana and preserve CCTV footage, FASTag records and other technical evidence related to the alleged incident. A similar controversy erupted in Khairthal after the family of Ramdhan, a former BJP leader and newly elected Congress councillor, lodged an FIR alleging his abduction. The complaint accused Congress chairperson candidate Om Prakash Rogha and local traders of kidnapping and intimidation. Traders rejected the allegations and observed a shutdown in Khairthal on Saturday. The Khairthal council has 20 Congress councillors, 17 Independents and eight BJP members. However, Congress leader Vikram Singh Chaudhary subsequently joined the BJP along with around 10 councillors and was nominated by the BJP for the chairperson's post....
