Jaipur, July 23 -- The Congress on Wednesday staged a march to the BJP's state headquarters against the detention of party leader Rahul Gandhi during a demonstration in New Delhi over the NEET paper leak. Senior Congress leaders, including former chief minister Ashok Gehlot, Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee (RPCC) president Govind Singh Dotasra and Leader of Opposition Tikaram Jully, led the demonstration along with hundreds of party workers. Before beginning their march, Congress workers burned an effigy of several Central government ministers. Police used water cannons to disperse Congress workers as they attempted to march towards the BJP office. The protesters continued to push forward, leading to a brief scuffle between Dotasra and police personnel. Dotasra alleged that paper leaks were taking place under the Modi government's watch, that people linked to the "exam cheating mafia" had connections with the BJP, that students protesting against paper leaks were being subjected to police action, and that Rahul Gandhi was detained whenever he raised issues concerning the youth. In such circumstances, he said, the BJP's protest was nothing more than a political drama. Former chief minister Ashok Gehlot also accused the BJP of encouraging confrontation despite being in power. "The BJP itself is attacking opposition parties while being in government. This trend started eight to ten years ago. The BJP believes in violence, whereas Congress believes in non-violence," Gehlot told reporters. Referring to the detention of Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi in New Delhi, Gehlot said "The manner in which Gandhi was surrounded and detained had drawn widespread criticism across the country." He recalled the arrest of Sanjay Gandhi after the Emergency, saying public outrage at the time translated into political support for Indira Gandhi.
