PBM maternal health scare: 2 mothers still critical, 1 discharged
BIKANER, June 13 -- Two of the six women who developed serious complications following deliveries at Prince Bijay Singh Memorial (PBM) Hospital remain in critical condition, with one developing a rare brain-clot disorder and another undergoing continuous dialysis, while a third patient is expected to be discharged after significant recovery, officials said on Friday.
Surendra Kumar Verma, Principal of Sardar Patel Medical College, Bikaner, told HT that- Sharda remains the most critical among the affected women after developing Cerebral Venous Thrombosis (CVT), a serious condition involving blood clots in the veins draining blood from the brain. He said specialists are making every effort to stabilise her condition and ensure the best possible treatment.
The controversy surfaced after six women developed severe complications, including acute kidney injury, following deliveries at PBM Hospital. The cases triggered multiple inquiries by health authorities and drew statewide attention after several patients required intensive care and specialised treatment. Another patient, Preeti, continues to be in critical condition and is undergoing continuous dialysis for kidney-related complications. Verma said doctors are also monitoring possible vision-related complications, though the extent of any visual impairment can only be assessed after she regains consciousness- Verma said.
In a positive development, Tara has recovered substantially and is likely to be discharged on Friday if her condition remains stable- he added.
Meanwhile, three committees constituted at the medical college and hospital levels to investigate the complications have submitted their reports along with recommendations. Verma said the administration has already begun implementing the measures to strengthen treatment protocols.
The hospital administration is also awaiting the results of laboratory testing of 27 medicines commonly used during normal deliveries. The samples were collected as part of a parallel investigation into the possible causes of the complications....
