India, May 23 -- A series of drowning incidents across Bikaner district have claimed at least nine lives in recent days, exposing serious safety gaps around open farm water reservoirs (diggis) and triggering widespread concern in rural areas.
In most cases of these cases, the victims died while attempting to rescue family members who had fallen into deep, unfenced water bodies.
The latest incident happened on Thursday late at night in Bachhasar village under the NAAL police station area, where a father and daughter drowned in a farm diggi.
SHO of NAAL police station, Vikas Vishnoi, said that 22-year-old Sushila had gone to fetch water when she slipped and fell into the reservoir.
Her father, Gorakharam Meghwal, immediately jumped in to save her, but both were trapped in the deep water and could not escape.
Villagers rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation, following which divers recovered both bodies after nearly two hours of effort.
The officials have completed the postmortem formalities and handed over the bodies to the family....
