Jaipur, Aug. 21 -- The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has given the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur one more week to respond to proceedings concerning its water consumption and water-management practices amid growing concerns over water scarcity. The Principal Bench of the NGT, New Delhi, heard the matter on August 17 in connection with proceedings examining water use at cricket stadiums across the country. During the hearing, counsel appearing for the Sawai Mansingh Stadium sought one week's time to file its reply. The development comes after the Tribunal, in its July 2 order, had restrained the Sawai Mansingh Stadium, along with Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur and Dr DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai, from conducting further sports activities without the Tribunal's permission until the next hearing. The interim restriction was imposed after the three stadiums failed to appear before the Tribunal or submit replies despite repeated notices, including those issued by the Central Ground Water Authority (CGWA). The NGT's proceedings are linked to concerns over the use of water for maintaining cricket grounds and other stadium facilities, particularly in areas facing water shortages. The Tribunal is examining compliance with directions relating to water consumption, groundwater extraction and sustainable water-management practices. At the August 17 hearing, the counsel for the Raipur stadium also sought one week's time to submit its response.
