NGT directs further action against units polluting Bikaner
Jaipur, Oct. 28 -- The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the Rajasthan State Pollution Control Board (RSPCB) to take further action against industrial units responsible for air pollution in Khara village and adjoining industrial areas of Bikaner district, and submit an action-taken report within three weeks.
The tribunal's Central Zone Bench in Bhopal, comprising judicial member Justice Sheo Kumar Singh and expert member Sudhir Kumar Chaturvedi, issued the directions while hearing a suo motu case on October 26 over concerns about air pollution in the area.
The tribunal was informed that the pollution control board had inspected industrial units and issued closure notices to 21 units. It also took note of a health survey conducted by the Bikaner medical department, which covered 694 houses in Khara village and adjoining industrial areas. Of those surveyed, 121 people were identified as having symptoms associated with respiratory ailments. The identified individuals were referred for detailed medical examinations, while medical camps were being organised periodically, the tribunal was told.
The case was registered as Original Application No. 35/2026 (CZ) following a letter petition by Ram Singh Khara, referring to a December 12, 2025, media report highlighting villagers' concerns over pollution. The report referred to families deciding not to send their children to school amid concerns about pollution.
The matter will be heard next on December 18, 2026....
