Monsoon in raj Weakens, Kharif Sowing slows
Jaipur, July 12 -- The monsoon has weakened across Rajasthan, with the dry spell likely to continue for at least another week, according to the Meteorological Centre in Jaipur. The weather department has forecast weak monsoon conditions across the state over the next seven days, with most districts expected to remain largely dry and only isolated light showers likely at a few places.
Meteorologists said there is currently no indication of any major or widespread rain-bearing system becoming active over Rajasthan during the next week.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), between June 1 and July 10, rainfall remained either normal or deficient in 17 districts, while seven districts recorded very deficient rainfall. The lack of rainfall during June has significantly affected agricultural activity, with 34 districts falling behind in Kharif sowing.
Farmers in these districts cultivate crops such as pearl millet (bajra), maize, pulses and oilseeds during the Kharif season. Sowing of major crops, including bajra, sorghum, paddy and maize, has declined by up to 30% compared with the same period last year.
Official data shows that by July 9 last year, Kharif crops had been sown over 11.6 million hectares. This year, however, sowing has covered only 9.2 million hectares.htc...
