Jodhpur, June 18 -- A 30-year-old man who had been called for questioning in connection with a missing woman case died after allegedly consuming a poisonous substance inside a police station in Jodhpur, police said on Wednesday. According to police, a missing person report regarding a young woman was registered on June 4. During the investigation, call detail records revealed that she had been in prolonged contact with the man. Based on this information, he was summoned to Basni police station for questioning on Tuesday. Basni SHO Nitin Dave said, "The man was seated in a room at the police station when he consumed a poisonous substance. Police immediately rushed him to AIIMS Jodhpur, where he was admitted for treatment. His statement was also recorded by the police. However, he succumbed Tuesday night while undergoing treatment." The deceased's brother accused the police of subjecting him to repeated harassment. Family members claimed that police had been summoning him for questioning for several days, causing him significant mental distress. They further alleged that a head constable had threatened him over the phone. Demanding an impartial investigation, the family questioned how the man was able to consume poison while under police supervision at the station. Police, however, maintained that he had brought the poisonous substance with him. Following the incident, family members and members of the community staged a sit-in protest outside the AIIMS mortuary, demanding action against the police personnel involved, along with compensation and a government job for one of the deceased's dependents. Senior police officers reached the spot on Wednesday and held discussions with the protesters. Jodhpur West additional deputy commissioner of police Narendra Rathore told HT, "After being admitted to the hospital, the young man's statement was recorded before a magistrate.
