Bharatpur/Sawai Madhopur, Aug. 4 -- A 78-year-old woman sustained critical injuries after getting attacked by a leopard that entered her house in Sawai Madhopur district late Sunday night, police said, adding that it is the latest incident underscoring the growing movement of leopards into human settlements across Rajasthan. Deputy conservator of forest Manas Singh said the incident occurred in Todara village, located on the fringes of the Ranthambore Tiger Reserve, when the leopard entered the house of Leela Devi while she was asleep. The woman suffered severe head and neck injuries and was initially taken to the district hospital before being referred to Jaipur for advanced treatment. She remains under treatment in critical condition, Singh said. According to her son, Vinod Kumar, the family was asleep when the leopard entered the house around midnight, attacked his mother, and reportedly grabbed her in its jaws before attempting to drag her towards a wall. Hearing her screams, family members rushed to the spot, forcing the animal to flee. Forest department officials reached the village after being alerted by residents and launched monitoring operations in the area. The attack comes amid a series of leopard incursions into human habitations across Rajasthan. On July 20, a leopard entered a liquor shop in Todaraisingh town of Tonk district after attacking two people outside, injuring three persons in total. It was later tranquillised and captured. Officials said Todara village has witnessed frequent leopard movement in recent years, and four leopards have already been rescued from the surrounding region.
