Kishau Dam: Raj, Haryana CMs meet to seek consensus
Jaipur, May 14 -- Rajasthan chief minister Bhajan Lal Sharma met Union jal shakti minister CR Patil and Haryana chief minister Nayab Singh Saini in New Delhi on Wednesday to forge inter-state consensus on the long-delayed Kishau Dam and accelerate Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) connectivity between Rajasthan and Delhi through Haryana.
The meeting also reviewed progress under the Yamuna Water Agreement and other pending inter-state infrastructure and water-sharing issues.
Sharma said extensive deliberations were held on securing agreement among all concerned states for the long-pending Kishau storage project, which forms a major component of the upper Yamuna basin water management plan.
Proposed on the Tons River and jointly developed by Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, the Kishau project will have a storage capacity of 1,324 MCM. It holds strategic importance for downstream states including Rajasthan by improving regulated water supply.
The chief minister said once the Kishau, Renukaji and Lakhwar storage projects are completed, Rajasthan would continue receiving Yamuna water through the proposed underground pipeline system even beyond the monsoon allocation period. Rajasthan expects around 201 MCM of water from the combined upper Yamuna basin projects after completion. Apart from Kishau, the under-construction Lakhwar Dam in Uttarakhand has a proposed storage capacity of 331 MCM, while the Renuka project on the Giri River in Himachal Pradesh will have 498 MCM.
Another outcome was consensus between Rajasthan and Haryana to fast-track the RRTS project connecting Rajasthan with Delhi through Haryana. "Both sides agreed to move forward quickly on the high-speed regional transport corridor, which is expected to significantly improve connectivity between Rajasthan, Haryana and the national capital region," said the CM.
Sharma also raised the persistent waterlogging problem in Bhiwadi, with possible long-term solutions explored.
The meeting reviewed progress on the Yamuna water pipeline project under the Rajasthan-Haryana agreement. Officials said a joint Detailed Project Report has been prepared and shared with Haryana.
Most tapping point details required for supplying drinking water to various regions have been provided by Haryana and will be incorporated into the DPR before upload to the Central Water Commission's online portal for technical examination.
Officials added that additional tapping points, if provided later by Haryana, would be included during the DPR review.
Rajasthan and Haryana signed an MoU in 2024, under which Yamuna water allocated from the Hathinikund Barrage between July and October would be transported via underground pipelines to districts including Churu, Sikar and Jhunjhunu....
