Jaipur, Aug. 4 -- Police used water cannons and later resorted to a lathi-charge after members of the Shri Rashtriya Rajput Karni Sena (SRK), protesting against the new University Grants Commission (UGC) regulations, allegedly breached barricades during a march to the Collectorate and later attempted to proceed towards the BJP state office in Jaipur on Monday, officials said. Several protesters were reportedly injured, while deputy commissioner of police (West) Prashant Kiran was allegedly manhandled during the clashes. The protest under the name of The Savarna Nyay Yatra, was organised by the Shri Rashtriya Rajput Karni Sena under the leadership of its national president, Mahipal Singh Makrana, demanding the rollback of the new UGC regulations and raising various demands concerning the upper-caste community. Thousands of supporters from Jaipur and districts including Bikaner, Churu, Jhunjhunu, Sikar and others gathered at Ravan Gate on Kalwad Road from early Monday morning before beginning the march towards Collectorate Circle. The Savarna Nyay Yatra, which returned to Jaipur on Sunday evening after covering nearly 800 kilometres across Rajasthan, crossed Jhotwara Pulia and proceeded towards the Collectorate via Chaumu Pulia. Police had erected barricades and deployed additional personnel to prevent the procession from moving ahead. However, protesters continued advancing despite the restrictions, prompting police to use water cannons. According to police, protesters broke through the barricades at Chaumu Pulia, leading to a scuffle with security personnel. During the confrontation, DCP (West) Prashant Kiran was allegedly manhandled. After reaching Collectorate Circle, a section of the protesters attempted to march towards the BJP state office. Police again tried to stop them, triggering another confrontation. During the ensuing clash, police resorted to a lathi-charge to disperse the crowd. Mahipal Singh Makrana also scuffled with police personnel during the confrontation. Some protesters later staged a sit-in beneath the Khasa Kothi flyover to protest the police action. Addressing the media, Makrana alleged that the 800-km yatra had remained peaceful throughout its journey but was stopped after entering Jaipur. He claimed that water cannons were used against women participants and that police lathi-charged protesters, leaving several injured, including one participant who allegedly suffered a fractured leg. Makrana further alleged that the administration had attempted to disrupt the yatra by stopping buses carrying supporters and preventing people from reaching the protest venue.
