Bharatpur/Karauli, Aug. 9 -- The recovery of a centuries-old cannon allegedly stolen from Narwar Fort in Madhya Pradesh 15 days ago has been delayed as members of the Meena community continue a sit-in protest in Karauli's Gamwada Meena village, people familiar with the matter said. On Friday, the protesters submitted a memorandum to Karauli superintendent of police Lokesh Sonwal seeking the withdrawal of cases against villagers. Around 50 villagers have been protesting for the past 16 days, demanding that police withdraw cases registered against them during the Panchana Dam water dispute and remove their names from complaints related to the cannon theft. Police, however, said the cannon is an invaluable historical artefact and must be recovered. They added that the villagers' demands would be examined separately. The cannon was allegedly stolen on July 15 from Narwar Fort in Madhya Pradesh. Acting on technical inputs, Madhya Pradesh Police, along with Karauli Police, conducted raids and arrested two accused on July 26. The arrested men were identified as Aman Kumar Meena of Palanpur village and Timmu Ram Meena of Gamwada Meena village. Madhya Pradesh Police have alleged that the stolen cannon was intended to intimidate members of the Gurjar community and could have been used to target the Panchana Dam amid the ongoing water dispute between the Gurjar and Meena communities. Investigators said the alleged motive emerged during the interrogation of the arrested accused and remains part of the ongoing probe.
