Illegal mining suspects run over cop in Sawai Madhopur
Bharatpur/Sawai Madhopur, Oct. 8 -- A police constable was injured after a speeding tractor-trolley allegedly involved in illegal sand mining ran over his leg while he tried to save an elderly couple from being hit in Sawai Madhopur's Chauth Ka Barwara area, police said on Wednesday.
The constable, identified as Surendra Singh, was referred to Jaipur for treatment, in the latest in a series of attacks on police and forest personnel confronting illegal mining in eastern Rajasthan.
Singh and another constable were patrolling the area on Tuesday to check illegal sand mining when they noticed a speeding tractor-trolley and attempted to stop it, police said. At the time, an elderly couple was walking along the roadside carrying fodder for their livestock. As the tractor-trolley sped towards them, Singh tried to intervene and was hit while attempting to protect them.
The vehicle ran over his leg before the driver fled the spot. The elderly woman also suffered injuries, police said.
Singh was initially taken to the district hospital and later referred to Jaipur. Police have registered a case against an unidentified driver on charges related to illegal mining and the alleged attempt to run over the constable. Police are trying to identify and arrest the driver.
Sawai Madhopur SP Jyeshtha Maitrei said the constable was hit by a suspected tractor-trolley travelling at high speed when he tried to save the elderly couple. "A case has been registered and efforts are on to identify and arrest the driver. The constable is undergoing treatment in Jaipur," she said.
The incident comes amid growing concern over attacks on frontline personnel involved in action against illegal mining in Rajasthan. In Pratapgarh, forest ranger Pratap Singh Chundawat was allegedly hit and dragged by a dumper on September 21 when he attempted to stop a vehicle involved in alleged illegal excavation. The death was taken up by the Supreme Court in its suo motu proceedings concerning illegal sand mining in the National Chambal Gharial Sanctuary.
Leader of Opposition Tikaram Jully, reacting to the Sawai Madhopur incident, alleged that illegal mining operators had become emboldened enough to target police and forest personnel. He linked the incident to the death of Chundawat and alleged that the government had failed to control the illegal mining network....
