BIKANER, June 12 -- State health minister Gajendra Singh Khimsar has attributed the serious complications suffered by six postpartum women at Prince Bijay Singh Memorial (PBM) Hospital to poor maternal health conditions and extreme summer temperatures, while a medical expert team from Jodhpur has reportedly found no evidence of negligence in their treatment. Khimsar, who is also the minister in charge of Bikaner district, visited the hospital on Wednesday and interacted with the affected women and their families regarding the treatment provided and the controversy surrounding the cases. Speaking to HT after the visit, he said preliminary findings suggested that underlying health conditions, coupled with intense heat, had contributed to the complications. According to the minister, three of the affected women delivered their babies normally without undergoing surgery, while three others underwent C-sections. He said many of them were suffering from severe anaemia, malnutrition and complications related to previous pregnancies. One of the women had been referred to PBM Hospital in a critical condition and had been under treatment there since May 16. "The lack of proper pre-maternity care and the intense hot weather appear to have resulted in these complications," he said. He added that all committees constituted to investigate the matter, including the six-member expert team from Jodhpur, had submitted their reports to the state government, which would take appropriate action based on the findings. PBM Hospital superintendent Dr. Bhikham Chand Ghiya told HT: "The members of the team found the treatment and delivery protocols to be appropriate. No lapse has surfaced during the inquiry". However, investigations into a possible drug-related cause are underway. The hospital administration has collected samples of 27 medicines commonly used during deliveries and Caesarean procedures and sent them for testing. The drug control department is examining them, and its report is expected in some days....
