Jodhpur, July 16 -- The Rajasthan high court has acquitted a man who was sentenced to death by a trial court for the murder of his wife, citing serious deficiencies in the investigation and failure of the prosecution to establish guilt beyond reasonable doubt. A bench of justices Vinit Kumar Mathur and Chandra Shekhar Sharma on Tuesday set aside the conviction and death penalty awarded by the additional district and session judge, Mavli, Udaipur on December 8, 2025 to Premlal. It was hearing the Death Reference submitted by the trial court along with the appeal filed by the accused. The case originated from a complaint filed by Bhagga, father of the deceased, alleging his daughter Nima had been called by her husband on January 12, 2023, and did not return. Her body was recovered three days later. 'The prosecution has failed to satisfy the well-established principles governing proof by circumstantial evidence. The circumstances relied upon have not been proved beyond reasonable doubt, nor do they form a complete and unbroken chain pointing unerringly towards the guilt of the accused-appellant,' the bench observed.
