GST officer's kin held hostage, robbers flee with 15 tolas gold
Alwar, July 5 -- Three masked and armed robbers allegedly held the family of a GST assistant commissioner hostage for nearly 90 minutes at their home in Alwar on Saturday morning and escaped with around 15 tolas of gold jewellery, cash and other valuables, police said.
According to police, the robbery took place at the residence of Om Prakash, an assistant commissioner in the GST Department, in Shalimar Nagar under the Sadar police station limits.
The accused are suspected to have climbed onto the rooftop late on Friday and remained hidden through the night, police said, adding that at around 6 am on Saturday, when the family opened the rooftop gate, the three men allegedly entered the house at gunpoint.
Police said the robbers overpowered Om Prakash, his wife and children, tied up and gagged four family members, and assaulted them when they resisted. The accused allegedly threatened to kill the family and rape the officer's wife if the family did not cooperate, police said.
The robbers forced the woman to remove her jewellery before ransacking the house. They escaped with around 15 tolas of gold ornaments, cash and other valuables worth several lakhs of rupees, police said. Before fleeing, they allegedly warned the family against informing the police.
Senior police officers, including additional superintendents of police Priyanka Raghuvanshi and Deepak Sharma, rushed to the spot after being alerted. A forensic science laboratory (FSL) team examined the crime scene and collected evidence.
Police are scanning CCTV footage from the surrounding area and analysing technical evidence to identify and trace the accused.
Additional SP Priyanka Raghuvanshi said, "Investigators are probing the case from all angles and the accused would be arrested soon."
The incident sparked a political confrontation, with Leader of Opposition Tikaram Jully accusing the BJP government of failing to maintain law and order.
In a post on X, Jully termed the robbery a "horrific and shameful reflection" of the state's deteriorating law and order situation, alleging that criminals had become emboldened under the BJP government. He claimed that when the family of a senior government officer was not safe inside its home, the condition of ordinary citizens could be imagined.
Referring to PM Narendra Modi's visit to Rajasthan on Saturday, Jully urged him to "see the ground reality" before making claims of development and good governance, alleging that the state was witnessing a situation where "criminals are fearless and the public is scared."...
