Governor warns youth against substance abuse
Jaipur, April 25 -- Rajasthan Governor and chancellor Haribhau Bagde on Friday made a strong appeal to the youth to stay away from drugs, warning that substance abuse is being fuelled through cross-border trafficking aimed at weakening India's demographic strength.
Addressing the 11th convocation ceremony of Rajasthan University of Health Sciences, the Governor said that neighbouring countries are involved in the illegal drug trade and do not want India to remain a young nation.
"Drugs make a person age prematurely and destroy both physical and mental health. The youth must remain vigilant and stay away from such harmful habits," he said, stressing that the country's future depends on a healthy and aware young generation.
Calling for collective efforts towards building a "Golden India," Governor Bagde urged students to contribute to the holistic development of society with a positive mindset.
He said that the true purpose of education and degrees lies in placing the nation above all personal interests.
Describing convocation as the beginning of a new phase in life, the Governor drew parallels with the ancient Samavartan Sanskar in the Gurukul system, where students were given final guidance to lead a life of ideal conduct. "Convocation today carries the same spirit of responsibility and transition," the Governor said.
The Governor also spoke about the impact of colonial education policies, referring to the system introduced by Thomas Babington Macaulay, which he said distanced Indians from their roots and history.
He highlighted the importance of the National Education Policy 2020 in reconnecting the country with its cultural and intellectual heritage.
Highlighting India's contributions to global knowledge, Bagde said the concept of zero originated in India, enabling mathematical advancements worldwide.
The Governor also referred to ancient scholars like Bhaskaracharya, stating that he had described the Earth as spherical and discussed gravitational principles centuries before modern Western scientists.
Earlier in his address, Bagde reiterated that skill development is a key component of modern education and essential for building a self-reliant India.
He said historical systems like Gurukuls once played a vital role in shaping society but were dismantled during colonial rule.
On the occasion, medical and health minister Gajendra Singh Khimsar said that the state government is working to develop the university on the lines of AIIMS into a premier medical institution.
Minister Khimsar also outlined efforts to promote Rajasthan as a hub for medical tourism....
