Kota, July 5 -- An eight-year-old girl suffering from thalassemia allegedly contracted HIV after receiving blood transfusions at JK Lone Hospital in Kota district, prompting Kota Medical College to order an inquiry, officials said on Saturday.
The girl, a resident of Kota, was diagnosed with thalassemia at the age of three and has since been receiving regular blood transfusions at JK Lone Hospital. According to her family, her last blood transfusion at the hospital was administered in June last year, following which she continued treatment in Jaipur. Her family alleged the infection was caused by contaminated blood transfused at JK Lone Hospital.
Kota Medical College principal Dr. Nilesh Jain said, "The institution had received a communication from the district collector's office regarding the case and had constituted a three-member inquiry committee."
Dr. Paramendra Pachauri, a member of the committee, saidblood intended for children with thalassemia is screened using the nucleic acid test, which can detect HIV and other infections during the early window period. "Given the stringent screening protocols, the possibility of HIV transmission through our blood bank is extremely low. Even so, an impartial investigation is being conducted," he said.htc...
