Gehlot warns of possible shortage of fertilisers
Jaipur, May 21 -- Former Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot on Wednesday warned of a looming fertiliser shortage in the country, saying shortages of urea, DAP and other fertilisers could severely affect farmers in the coming months.
In a post on X, Gehlot said India imports a large portion of its fertiliser requirements and that the supply chain has been badly affected.
"The biggest upcoming crisis will be of urea, DAP and other fertilisers. India imports most fertilisers, and supplies are currently being badly affected," he said.
Gehlot said farmers were already forced to stand in long queues even when supplies were normal, and warned the situation could become "frightening" if shortages deepen.
He said it was the government's responsibility to ensure an uninterrupted supply of fertilisers.
The senior Congress leader also urged the Centre and the Rajasthan government to begin creating awareness among farmers and to encourage cultivation of crops that require less use of fertilisers.
"In this time of crisis, the more transparently the government works instead of keeping the public confused, the easier it will be for everyone to deal with the situation," Gehlot said.
Commenting on the matter, BJP spokesperson Ram Lal Sharma said, "The BJP government acknowledges that fertilisers and DAP are imported commodities, and considering the global crisis, the government is making every effort to import them from other countries. Farmers need to maintain order, and black marketing must be stopped. The interests of farmers will be protected."...
