Jaipur, Aug. 5 -- Former Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot on Tuesday criticised the BJP government over its preparedness for the upcoming visit of a Supreme Court-appointed high-power committee to inspect the Aravalli range, alleging that the state had failed to appoint a nodal officer despite repeated reminders. Sharing a newspaper report on X, Gehlot said the committee will visit Delhi, Haryana and Rajasthan from August 6 to 10 to assess environmental conditions, mining activities, biodiversity and land use in the Aravalli region. Calling the inspection a crucial opportunity for Aravalli conservation, Gehlot said it was "regrettable" that the Rajasthan government had not appointed a nodal officer despite the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE) writing to the state on June 27 and subsequently sending a reminder. Gehlot said the Aravallis act as a natural barrier against the expansion of the Thar Desert and are vital for water resources, rainfall regulation, wildlife conservation and the livelihoods of millions. Targeting the BJP over its election promises, he said the party had pledged to completely stop illegal mining in the Aravallis and develop a green corridor along the range. "Today, the government has failed to make even the basic administrative preparations for the Supreme Court committee's visit," he said. Gehlot urged the government to appoint a senior nodal officer, present Rajasthan's case before the committee and take action against illegal mining.
