Jaipur, April 7 -- Former chief minister Ashok Gehlot on Monday launched a sharp attack on the Centre's foreign policy, saying remarks attributed to Donald Trump about Prime Minister Narendra Modi are "shameful" and should not be tolerated. Addressing a peace gathering marking the conclusion of the Dandi March event in Jaipur, Gehlot said that irrespective of political differences, any disrespect towards the Prime Minister amounts to disrespect towards the nation. Questioning the direction of India's foreign policy, the former chief minister said statements like those attributed to Trump-suggesting that Modi was trying to please him and that his political career could be influenced-raise serious concerns. "If such remarks are made and we remain silent, it is a matter of concern. This needs to be discussed openly," he added. Gehlot also called on the youth to break their silence and speak up on national issues. He said a growing tendency to remain quiet on critical developments could harm the country. "Silence in the face of wrongdoing will ultimately damage the nation," he said. Gehlot said the country is passing through a phase where democracy appears to be under strain. "People look towards the judiciary for justice, but even that is under pressure. Agencies are being misused and decisions are increasingly arbitrary," he alleged, adding that even the Election Commission appears to be functioning under pressure. On global developments, Gehlot expressed concern over rising conflicts and the lack of strong international response. He also questioned the global silence over alleged actions involving Venezuela, saying the lack of condemnation reflects a worrying trend. "War only brings destruction. Gandhi's philosophy of peace, love, and non-violence is more relevant today than ever," he said. He also noted that during his tenure, initiatives like the peace and non-violence Department were established to carry forward Gandhi's vision. Commenting on the issue, BJP spokesperson Ram Lal Sharma said everyone is aware of Donald Trump's behaviour and that no one takes him seriously, adding that even American citizens are now protesting against him.
