Gehlot hails Cong distt chief selection process
Jaipur, June 1 -- Former chief minister Ashok Gehlot on Sunday praised Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's new organisational initiative for selecting district presidents, describing it as a significant reform aimed at strengthening the party at the grassroots level.
Speaking to reporters, Gehlot said the Congress has introduced a new system under which independent observers visit districts, conduct their own assessments without accepting recommendation letters, and shortlist candidates for district president posts. The final selection is made from among the shortlisted names.
He said the newly appointed district presidents are also undergoing a 10-day training programme designed to equip them with leadership and organisational skills.
According to Gehlot, the initiative aims to prepare leaders who can unite party workers and effectively connect with people across their districts.
"The Congress leadership has made it clear that district presidents who perform well could even be given an opportunity to participate in the Central Election Committee, which plays a key role in ticket distribution. It is a major decision that gives importance to grassroots feedback," Gehlot said.
He added that the success of the exercise would depend on how sincerely the newly appointed district chiefs embrace Rahul Gandhi's vision, engage with people at the village and household level, and raise public issues such as unemployment, inflation and law and order.
Responding to a question about the alleged assault on Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee in West Bengal, Gehlot launched a sharp attack on the BJP, alleging the state's political atmosphere had deteriorated since the party came to power.
He claimed that the BJP's rise in Bengal had been facilitated by the Election Commission and alleged irregularities during the election process. He accused the BJP and the RSS of encouraging a culture of aggression and said both the state administration and the Centre were failing to prevent such incidents.
Commenting on the matter, BJP spokesperson Ram Lal Sharma said such incidents can happen to anyone and that the law would take its course against whoever is found responsible. "BJP believes in the rule of law and the Constitution. However, the incident in Bengal appears to be a result of the suppression and alleged atrocities committed by the TMC against the public"....
