BIKANER, June 25 -- The four-day standoff over the death of Sharda Nayak during childbirth at PBM Hospital in Bikaner ended on Wednesday after the bereaved family and the administration reached an agreement, leading to the withdrawal of the protest and completion of the autopsy, officials said. ADM (Administration) Ummed Singh Ratnu said, "The administration had agreed to a fair inquiry into the case and to provide contractual employment to one member of the deceased Sharda Nayak's family." He said the administration would also examine whether any financial assistance could be extended under existing government norms. Regarding the Rs.25 lakh assistance announced during talks, Ratnu said any such contribution would depend on support voluntarily arranged by those leading the protest. He added that the autopsy had been conducted and the body was handed over to the family for the last rites. Congress (Rural) president Bishna Ram Siyag said discussions with SDM Rajesh Nayak resulted in an assurance of immediate financial assistance of Rs.25 lakh through public contributions. He said the administration also agreed to send a proposal to the state government seeking approval for an additional Rs.50 lakh compensation package and assured contractual employment to one family member. As part of the agreement, it was decided that police would investigate the matter if the family submits a formal complaint. If the inquiry establishes negligence on the part of any doctor or hospital employee, legal action would be initiated and a case registered against those found responsible. Sharda Nayak died on June 21, triggering protests by family members and Congress leaders. The family had refused to allow autopsy and staged a sit-in outside the mortuary for four days....
