Edu dept directs schools to display 'sugar boards' to raise awareness
Jaipur, Oct. 24 -- The Rajasthan education department has directed all schools across the state to install and display "Sugar Boards" to raise awareness among children about the health risks associated with excessive sugar consumption and the importance of a balanced diet.
The directive was issued by Lalit Kumar, director of elementary education, Bikaner, through an order dated October 21. It follows a letter dated October 1, 2026, from the Rajasthan State Commission for Protection of Child Rights.
Inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Fit India Movement, the initiative follows an advisory issued by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR). It aims to educate students about the harmful effects of excessive sugar intake, the presence of hidden sugar in commonly consumed food products and the benefits of a healthy diet.
Under the directive, all schools in Rajasthan are required to display Sugar Boards on their premises. The boards will serve as educational tools to help students understand the sugar content of different food items and the health risks associated with excessive consumption. The initiative is linked to National Nutrition Month, observed in September, as part of efforts to strengthen nutritional awareness among children.
The move is expected to encourage students to make informed food choices and develop healthier eating habits from an early age. It will also help them recognise that sugar is not limited to sweets and sugary drinks but may also be present in packaged and processed foods.
Vijay Soni, state president of Rajasthan Shikshak Sangh Radhakrishnan, welcomed the decision, calling it a commendable initiative for children's health and well-being.
"Inspired by the Fit India Movement, this initiative will help children understand the harmful effects of excessive sugar consumption and encourage them to adopt a healthy diet. It is an important step towards building a healthier and more aware generation. Creating awareness among children today will lay a strong foundation for their bright future," Soni said.
The initiative seeks to position schools as key platforms for promoting nutritional awareness and encouraging healthier lifestyles among students across Rajasthan....
