doctors at aiims jodhpur extract 20.8-kg tumour from 59-year-old
Jaipur, June 4 -- Doctors at AIIMS Jodhpur have successfully removing a giant retroperitoneal tumour weighing 20.8 kilogram from a 59-year-old patient's right kidney, a press release issued by the hospital said.
The tumour ranks among the largest of its kind reported both in India and globally. The patient, who weighed 160 kilograms, underwent the high-risk procedure successfully and is recovering under medical supervision, said the release.
It added that the patient was admitted to the Department of General Surgery with complaints of abdominal fullness and pain for the preceding one year.
Following detailed clinical evaluation, advanced radiological imaging, and multidisciplinary assessment, the patient was diagnosed with a giant retroperitoneal tumor, suspected to be a liposarcoma.
The surgery lasted approximately 8 hours and 30 minutes and was led by Dr. Satya Prakash Meena.
The right kidney had to be removed en bloc with the mass to achieve complete surgical excision.
Based on the available published literature reviewed by the treating team through the PubMed database, the excised tumor qualifies as a giant retroperitoneal liposarcoma and appears to be the largest and heaviest retroperitoneal liposarcoma successfully excised and reported from Rajasthan.
The release claimed that the tumour was being considered the third largest reported in India by dimensions and among the heaviest reported cases nationally....
