Docs stage protest after violence in govt hospital
Jaipur, May 17 -- Resident doctors in Kota on Saturday staged a protest after four doctors were injured during a clash that erupted in Kota MBS Hospital on Friday between them and a group of visitors over two patients' deaths, officials said.
According to police, two patients - Bundi-based Madan Lal (56), and Tonk-based Kishan Kumar (25) were admitted to the emergency ward of the hospital on Friday evening but they died during treatment.
Station house officer of Nayapura police station, Vinod Kumar, said, "Soon after their deaths, both their family members alleged that they were given a wrong injection leading to their death, as they were not so critical when taken to the hospital. Later, these family members gathered some more people, entered the hospital premises and launched an attack on the doctors, nurses and other staff."
"At least four resident doctors sustained injuries during the incident. They were given treatment and were released on Saturday morning. They are stable now. The angry mob also damaged some chairs, tables, cupboards stocked with medicines, and other properties of the jospital," the officer added.
Later, they also brought the beds carrying the two patients outside the hospital and staged a sit-in protest demanding action against the hospital authority.
Senior police and administrative officers immediately reached the spot and controlled the situation. They also assured the family members of launching a probe into the matter.
"After their assurance, the family members also agreed to send the bodies for an autopsy. They will be handed over soon as we get the report," said the SHO.
However, the superintendent of the MBS Hospital, Dr Dharmraj Meena maintained that both the patients were admitted to the emergency ward at a very critical condition. "While Madan was suffering from pneumonia, Kishan had a serious stage of tetanus. We started their treatment but unfortunately could not save him. No wrong treatment was given to them. But the family was so angry that they refused to believe the facts," he said.
He added: "They had suddenly launched an attack on us creating a ruckus in the hospital. One of them also threatened to shoot me down. Many of the resident doctors were also injured."
Following the incident, the resident doctors also lodged an FIR at the Nayapura police station against unidentified people for voluntarily causing hurt and damaging property of a government hospital. They also started a sit-in protest in front of the hospital on Saturday seeking a stricter security measures for them at their workplaces.
"Beating and threatening the resresident doctors at the hospital is not a small thing. They didn't give any wrong treatment. Even if the families feel something wrong took place, they should have followed the rules and maintained the law and order situation by approaching police. But many of our doctors sustained injuries yesterday. If necessary action is not taken against these miscreants, we will go for a strike," said Dr Hemant Sharma, the president of Resident Doctors Association....
