Dismantle illegal Jojari effluent network: SC to Rajasthan govt
JODHPUR, June 2 -- The Supreme Court has issued a series of stringent directions to Rajasthan authorities in the Jojari river pollution case, ordering the complete dismantling of the illegal underground conduit network used for the discharge of industrial effluents and barring the reopening of closed industrial units without its prior approval.
A bench of justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta on May 29 directed that the entire conduit system, including connected manholes, discharge points and related structures, must first be fully mapped, documented and videographed under the supervision of the special investigation team (SIT) before any dismantling begins. It said the network constitutes critical evidence and must be preserved for investigation.
The court, in its order made public on Monday, further ordered a verification exercise across the affected area to detect any additional illegal discharge systems, whether surface-based or underground, to ensure that untreated effluents are not released into the Jojari river or connected water bodies in the future. Fixing a clear timeline, the court directed the SIT to file its first status report by July 15.
The bench said industrial units that have already been shut down will not be allowed to resume operations unless the Supreme Court itself grants express permission.
Taking note of the approaching monsoon, the bench ordered sludge removal from identified locations on a war footing, with all departments required to complete the exercise within six weeks. The matter will next be taken up on July 21....
