Bharatpur/Dholpur, Sept. 21 -- Thousands of villagers from Dholpur and Karauli will march to the Rajasthan Assembly in Jaipur on September 23, demanding cancellation of the Dholpur-Karauli Tiger Reserve notification, protesters said on Sunday. The protest has continued for 41 days at Basantpura Mor under Sar Mathura police station in Dholpur, with women participating. Protesters said the government had failed to address concerns of residents whose villages fall within the reserve. They are demanding that areas of Dholpur and Karauli brought under the reserve be excluded, alleging that restrictions have affected livelihoods. They said mining leases were closed after the area was brought under the reserve, resulting in loss of employment and forcing villagers to migrate to cities. "If the government is not ready to listen to us, the villagers have decided to march to the state Assembly in Jaipur on September 23 and stage a protest there," said Ajay Meena, a member of the protesters' committee. Protesters said 108 villages - 68 in Dholpur and 40 in Karauli - fall within the reserve. They also opposed proposals to relocate villagers, saying this would disrupt livelihoods and social ties.
