Cops go undercover to crack Rs.5L chain theft
Jaipur, June 9 -- A police constable posing as a street vendor, a 900-km chase across state borders and the analysis of footage from more than 300 CCTV cameras helped Ajmer Police crack a Rs.5 lakh jewellery theft and arrest a woman accused from Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh. The accused, Manorama Rajoriya alias Kanchan, allegedly part of an interstate gang that targets jewellery stores by posing as customers, was arrested after four days of covert surveillance, leading to the recovery of two stolen gold chains.
Ajmer Superintendent of Police Harsh Vardhan Agarwala said a special police team arrested the 50-year-old from Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh and recovered two stolen gold chains from her possession.
According to police, the theft took place on May 30 at Lalwani Gems and Jewellers in Ajmer's New Bazaar area. Three accused, posing as customers, allegedly distracted the showroom owner and staff before stealing two gold chains. Investigators examined footage from more than 300 CCTV cameras and tracked the accused over a distance of nearly 900 kilometres to Gwalior, where officers conducted four days of covert surveillance.
