JODHPUR, July 11 -- The Rajasthan high court on Thursday held that members of state and district Consumer Commissions should not be relieved from service until reaching the statutory retirement age of 65 years, while chairpersons should continue till the age of 67. The clarification was regarding a plea by the State government's principal secretary (food, civil supplies and consumer affairs), seeking clarification of a high court order dated March 18. The division bench of Justices Vinit Kumar Mathur and Chandra Shekhar Sharma claridied their own earlier order. Appearing for the state, AAG Rajesh Panwar submitted that service extension should be confined to the maximum age under the Consumer Protection Act. He argued that reinstating retired chairpersons and members would impose a substantial financial burden on the state. Representing the state high court Advocates Association, advocate Anil Bhandari contended that the state had not yet fully implemented the March 18 order. He submitted that many vacancies in the state and district Consumer Commissions were hurting proceedings, and added that despite Supreme Court orders, chairpersons and members were not paid prescribed salaries and allowances.
