CM launches statewide water conservation drive
Jaipur, May 26 -- Chief minister Bhajan Lal Sharma on Monday launched the 'Vande Ganga Jal Sanrakshan Jan Abhiyan' from Bisalpur Dam in Tonk district on the occasion of Ganga Dussehra, marking the beginning of a statewide water conservation campaign aimed at protecting and reviving traditional water sources across Rajasthan.
The chief minister performed ceremonial water worship at Bisalpur Dam amid Vedic chants and prayed for good rainfall in the state.
Addressing the gathering, Sharma said that according to Indian tradition, Goddess Ganga descended on Earth on the day of Ganga Dussehra due to the penance of sages and saints, becoming the lifeline of humanity. He said the state government had organised a similar campaign last year under which conservation and cleaning works were carried out at dams, ponds, lakes, anicuts and other water bodies across Rajasthan.
He said the campaign is being launched again this year from Monday and public representatives, including MPs, MLAs and local elected members, will participate in various activities related to water conservation throughout the state. "Water is life, and people should actively participate in this campaign to make it successful," the chief minister said.
The CM also became the first Chief Minister of Rajasthan to visit Bisalpur Dam and review its SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system in detail. He said Bisalpur Dam plays a crucial role in ensuring uninterrupted water supply to districts in eastern Rajasthan.
During the inspection, the chief minister directed officials to develop new structures in the dam area and undertake effective measures for recharging the Banas River to strengthen rainwater harvesting and groundwater recharge. He also instructed officials to construct a series of anicuts and install gates at suitable locations to improve water conservation capacity.
Sharma stressed that all water conservation and storage works should be executed with a long-term vision and proper planning to ensure maximum rainwater preservation. He reviewed the dam's management systems, water storage mechanisms and functioning of the SCADA system, while Water Resources Department Chief Engineer Bhuvan Bhaskar gave a video presentation on the technology and operations.
Under the 'Vande Ganga Jal Sanrakshan Jan Abhiyan', extensive public awareness and conservation programmes will be organised across Rajasthan from May 25 to June 5. Activities planned under the campaign include cleaning of wells, stepwells, ponds and other water bodies in villages, voluntary labour drives, water awareness meetings, morning rallies, plantation drives and public outreach programmes.
The government will also organise foundation stone laying and inauguration ceremonies for new water conservation projects through various departments during the campaign period....
