Jaipur, Sept. 10 -- Chief minister Bhajan Lal Sharma held a roadshow in Jaipur on Wednesday as campaigning concluded for the second phase of Rajasthan's urban local body elections. It was his 10th roadshow in five days as the BJP stepped up its outreach ahead of polling on Friday. Addressing the gathering, Sharma accused the previous Congress government of pursuing "appeasement politics" and claimed that his administration had taken measures to curb forced religious conversions such as "love jihad" and protect residents of Jaipur's walled city. "We have worked to eradicate the problem of love jihad in Rajasthan, including Jaipur. These incidents used to occur during the Gehlot government, but we introduced a law against religious conversion," he said. Sharma also defended his government's decision to merge the two municipal corporations each in Jaipur, Jodhpur and Kota. The previous Ashok Gehlot government had bifurcated the civic bodies in the three cities. "We have demonstrated that one city should have one municipal corporation," he said. Referring to his government's "One State, One Election" initiative, the chief minister took a swipe at the Congress, saying its leaders had claimed that the BJP government would not be able to conduct the elections simultaneously. "They used to say that even your uncle would not be able to implement One State, One Election. They should now see that their uncle is conducting these elections," Sharma said. He claimed projects pending for four to five decades had been taken up during the BJP government's two-and-a-half-year tenure. He cited the Ram Jal Setu Link Project, the Yamuna water agreement and an allocation of Rs.5,500 crore for the Indira Gandhi and Ganga canal systems. He said work was also underway on the Rs.10,500-crore Dewas project, the Rs.4,500-crore Som-Kamla-Amba project, the Rs.4,500-crore Mahi Dam project and the Rs.2,500-crore Brahmani river project. Sharma claimed that Rajasthan was moving towards becoming a power-surplus state. According to him, 12,000 MW of power-generation capacity had been added during his government's tenure, compared with 3,900 MW under the previous Congress government. On employment, the chief minister said his government had issued 189,000 appointment letters, initiated recruitment for 122,000 posts and announced another 70,000 vacancies.
