JAIPUR, Sept. 15 -- Rajasthan chief minister Bhajan Lal Sharma on Monday said the urban local body election results were a "stamp of approval" on his government's work and its "One State, One Election" initiative, as the BJP celebrated its performance. Sharma said voters had accepted the vision of "Viksit Bharat-Viksit Rajasthan" and backed the BJP's development policies. He said the verdict endorsed the government's performance during its first two-and-a-half years in office, with development schemes reaching across the state. "The people of Rajasthan have accepted the resolve of Viksit Bharat-Viksit Rajasthan," Sharma said, adding that young voters had expressed faith in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership and vision for a developed India. He said 78% of the commitments made by the BJP during the Assembly elections had already been fulfilled. The government would now work on commitments in its "Urban Development Sankalp Patra" for the 309 urban local bodies that went to polls. The elections were the first major statewide electoral test for the BJP government since it came to power in December 2023, ahead of the forthcoming panchayat polls. Sharma said the party would take the same development-oriented approach to voters and seek support on the basis of its work. Sharma also linked the verdict to the government's "One State, One Election" model for local body polls. He said repeated elections consumed government resources and time, while frequent enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct affected development work. Taking a swipe at Congress, he said the opposition had opposed the arrangement because repeated elections and the Model Code of Conduct kept development activities on hold. "We have implemented One State, One Election and now, with the election process over, the focus will be on taking development activities forward continuously," Sharma said. The chief minister said the government would now focus on completing its commitments. He also said the BJP expected to perform even better in the forthcoming panchayat elections, signalling that the party viewed the civic verdict as a broader mandate. At the BJP state headquarters, workers celebrated the results by distributing sweets and bursting firecrackers. Sharma said BJP representatives and workers had strengthened their connect with people by remaining involved in their everyday concerns. BJP office celebrations reflected confidence that the result would strengthen its position ahead of the next statewide electoral contests across Rajasthan's politics. Minister of State for Home Jawahar Singh Bedham also described the BJP's performance as a clear political message in favour of development and good governance. He said the civic elections were Sharma's first major political test and that the outcome showed the chief minister had strengthened public confidence through campaigning and interaction with voters. According to Bedham, urban voters had moved beyond caste considerations and traditional political equations and instead prioritised development, good governance and delivery of services. He said issues affecting daily life, including roads, sanitation, drinking water, street lighting, traffic management and urban amenities, remained key concerns. Bedham attributed the BJP's performance to better coordination between the government and party organisation, coupled with Sharma's continued outreach. "The people want work and delivery on the ground, not merely announcements and statements," Bedham said. He also highlighted the role of young voters and said Modi's popularity and the vision of a developed India had strengthened confidence in the BJP's agenda of development and opportunities in Rajasthan. Bedham said the verdict should be viewed as an indication of growing support for the politics of development and good governance, giving the government renewed political energy to pursue its vision of a "Viksit Rajasthan".
