Clarify stand on LPG situation: Raj Cong chief
Jaipur, March 28 -- Rajasthan Congress state Govind Singh Dotasra on Friday launched a sharp attack on the Centre, alleging that key promises made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi when he assumed office-including inflation control, curbing of unemployment andcorruption, and strengthening the economy and foreign policy remained neglected,
Addressing party workers during a protest at Shaheed Smarak in Jaipur over rising LPG prices and supply shortages, Dotasra said that beneficiaries of schemes like the Ujjwala Yojana, to provide gas connections to Below Poverty Line (BPL) families, were now struggling with rising cylinder prices and irregular supply.
He said the impact of inflation and fuel shortages is being felt across sections-from common households to industries-while accusing the government of not paying adequate attention to the situation.
Dotasra alleged that the government failed to ensure adequate storage of petroleum products. Despite early indications of global disruption, the Centre did not prepare in time, which was reflected by fuel and gas shortages, he said.
He also raised concerns over policy inconsistency, citing the halt and subsequent resumption of gas imports from Iran, and said such decisions indicate instability in policymaking.
Questioning the government's stand, Dotasra said there is confusion over the actual situation.
He noted that while the government initially denied any crisis, it later convened an all-party meeting.
"On one hand, the government claims there is no problem, while on the other, concerns about a potential crisis are being raised in Parliament. The real situation is still not clear," he said.
Leader of Opposition in the assembly Tikaram Jully also criticised the government, saying the prevailing situation in the country needs to be acknowledged rather than concealed. He alleged that flawed policies have led to the current crisis, forcing common people to struggle even for basic necessities like LPG cylinders.
Jully referred to the Barmer refinery project, stating that nearly 90-95 percent of the work had been completed during the previous Congress government, but the present dispensation has failed to finish the remaining portion. He questioned delays in its commissioning, noting that despite announcements, the refinery has not become operational even months after the proposed timelines.
He also pointed to a decline in domestic crude oil production and shrinking reserves, which have worsened the situation. He alleged that gas prices have been increased and supply to industries curtailed, impacting production and employment opportunities.
Jully said that although the Congress had assured support to the government in case of any crisis during a recent all-party meeting, the government denied the existence of any problem, claiming sufficient stock and smooth supply. "On the ground, people are standing in long queues for cylinders, and fuel dealers report a 20-30 percent cut in supply, which reflects the seriousness of the situation," he said.
He added that higher global oil prices are directly affecting consumers, and called for greater transparency in economic decisions. Accusing the government of misleading the public, Jully said the focus should be on addressing policy-level issues rather than diverting attention, as the gap between official claims and ground reality continues to widen.
Commenting on the issue, BJP state secretary Ekta Agarwal said that it is due to the policies and decisions of Prime Minister Narendra Modi that the country is witnessing signs of relief despite ongoing global challenges. She said that employment generation and stable markets are strengthening the economy.
Agarwal added that the government has taken concrete steps to protect consumer interests by reducing excise duty on petrol from Rs.10 to Rs.3 and bringing excise duty on diesel down to zero. She said these measures have provided significant relief to consumers and ensured that the burden of global economic challenges does not fall on the common people, reflecting the government's commitment to public welfare.
She added that Modi has elevated India's global stature to new heights and has been conferred with several top international honours, which was a testament to the country's influence on the global stage....
