Chief secy orders setting up of clear signage ahead of curves on NHs
Jaipur, July 4 -- Chief secretary V Srinivas has directed departments to install larger and clearer signboards ahead of curves on national highways, improve lighting at accident-prone stretches and strengthen emergency response infrastructure, days after the road accident on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway in Dausa that killed eight people.
An official release from the state government said that while addressing a high-level review meeting at the Government Secretariat on Thursday, Srinivas also ordered a statewide drive against encroachments and illegal parking on national highways.
He also ordered a phased upgrade of highway ambulances, better availability of trauma care facilities. The state transport department has been asked to strictly enforce mandatory reflector tape and other safety norms for heavy and commercial vehicles, crack down on repeat traffic violators and coordinate with transport unions to improve compliance.
The meeting was convened after a state-level inspection team visited the accident site and submitted its findings. The team found that signboards near the crash site lacked visibility and that directional signage for Jaipur was inadequate, forcing drivers to slow down to read them.
Dausa collector Soumya Jha said that the fire brigade took about 22 minutes to reach the site, prompting directions to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to improve firefighting infrastructure along the expressway. The meeting also reviewed CCTV footage from the accident site, examining factors such as the trailer's visibility, lane discipline, night-time visibility, reflector markings and road signage.
Srinivas also directed officials to coordinate with transport authorities in other states to verify the registration, fitness, insurance status and ownership details of the bus and trailer involved in the crash....
