Jaipur, Sept. 23 -- The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday won the deputy mayor's post in six of seven municipal corporations, consolidating its control of the state's urban local bodies a day after sweeping six mayoral elections. The deputy mayor contests in Ajmer and Pali ended in exact ties and were decided by lottery, while Bikaner produced the biggest upset, with the BJP wresting the post from the Congress despite the latter having a majority in the corporation. Elections for the posts of deputy mayor in seven municipal corporations, deputy chairperson in 47 municipal councils and vice-chairperson in 251 municipalities were held on Tuesday. In Bikaner, Congress had a clear majority and its candidate Anil Kalla had won the mayoral election a day earlier, but the BJP managed to capture the deputy mayor's post. BJP's Pankaj Gehlot defeated Congress candidate Naseem Bano by two votes, polling 40 votes against her 38. One vote went to NOTA and another was rejected. The result pointed to cross-voting within the Congress camp. The Congress has 42 councillors in the 80-member Bikaner Municipal Corporation, but its deputy mayor candidate received only 38 votes. The result means Bikaner, the only corporation among the seven where Congress won the mayor's post on Monday, will now have a BJP deputy mayor. The Congress had won the mayoral election with Anil Kalla polling 50 votes against BJP's Surendra Singh Shekhawat's 30. In Ajmer, contest was decided by lottery after BJP councillor Hemant Sankhla and Congress candidate Naurat Gurjar polled 40 votes each. Sankhla emerged as the winner. The BJP had secured 43 votes in Monday's mayoral election in Ajmer, when Anamika Sharma defeated Congress despite the latter having a larger number of councillors. Udaipur saw a more decisive BJP victory. BJP's Dinesh Bhatt was elected deputy mayor after securing 56 votes, while Congress candidate Laxminarayan Meghwal received 24 votes. Bhatt won by 32 votes in the 80-member corporation. The BJP had already secured the mayor's post, with Paras Singhvi defeating Congress candidate Poonam Kunwar Rathore. In Alwar, BJP's Ajay Poonia was elected deputy mayor with 40 votes, defeating Congress candidate Mamta Saini, who secured 24 votes. One vote was declared invalid. The BJP had also won the mayoral election in Alwar with support from independents and other councillors. In Bhilwara, the BJP completed a clean sweep of the two top posts without a contest. BJP's Radheshyam Somani was elected deputy mayor unopposed after neither Congress nor independent councillors fielded a candidate. BJP's Jaswant Kanwar had also been elected mayor unopposed. Bhilwara thus became the first corporation in the current civic cycle where both mayor and deputy mayor were elected without a contest. Bharatpur produced another significant result involving an independent councillor backed by the BJP. BJP-supported independent councillor Ambika Sain was elected deputy mayor with 49 votes, defeating Congress candidate Gajendra Saini, who received 15 votes. Congress has only six councillors in the corporation, meaning the Congress candidate's 15 votes reflected support beyond the party's own strength, while Ambika Sain secured a much wider backing among the councillors. In Pali, the deputy mayor election also went to a lottery after an exact tie. Independent candidate Mahboob T and BJP candidate Vikram Pal Singh both received 29 votes. One vote went to NOTA and one was rejected. Of 65 councillors, 60 cast votes, while five remained absent. The draw of lots ultimately went in favour of Mahboob T, giving the independent candidate the deputy mayor's post. The deputy mayor elections were held alongside elections for deputy chairpersons in municipal councils and vice-chairpersons in municipalities. The second-tier elections followed Monday's contests for mayors, chairpersons and presidents of ULBs, with councillors themselves voting to elect the posts. At the municipal council level, BJP's Mohan Kumawat was elected deputy chairperson of Rajsamand Municipal Council with 31 votes, defeating Congress candidate Pramod Raigar, who received 14 votes. Four independent councillors supported the BJP candidate. In Pratapgarh Municipal Council, Congress candidate Rekha Jain defeated BJP's Vijay Jatia in the deputy chairperson election. Jain received 24 votes against Jatia's 16. Congress candidates also won the vice-chairperson posts in Vijaynagar and Nasirabad, where Khushbu Lunawat and Ghanshyam Mehra respectively emerged victorious. BJP's Meenakshi Sharma was elected vice-chairperson in Sarwar, while BJP councillor Ramnaresh Yadav was elected unopposed deputy chairperson of Behror Municipal Council.
