Jaipur, Aug. 31 -- The BJP and Congress intensified their preparations for Rajasthan's urban local body elections as the nomination process entered its final day on Monday, amid reports of internal disagreements over candidate selection in both parties. The BJP flagged off campaign chariots from its state headquarters on Sunday evening to publicise the achievements and welfare schemes of the Narendra Modi government at the Centre and the Bhajanlal Sharma government in Rajasthan. Chief minister Bhajanlal Sharma and BJP state president Madan Rathore flagged off the chariots in the presence of state general secretary (organisation) Ajay Kumar. Equipped with LED screens, the chariots will broadcast videos highlighting the two governments' initiatives. The Eastern Rajasthan Canal Project-Yamuna water agreement, employment and welfare measures for young people, women, labourers and farmers feature prominently in the campaign. One of the slogans displayed on the vehicles calls upon voters to "make the lotus bloom in the municipal elections and take development forward". The Congress, meanwhile, stepped up efforts to contain internal differences, with senior leaders urging party workers to remain united. Addressing party leaders and workers in Udaipur on Sunday, former chief minister Ashok Gehlot claimed that people were unhappy with the BJP government and were recalling the welfare schemes introduced during the previous Congress administration. Warning party workers against disputes following ticket distribution, he said internal conflicts could undermine the Congress's chances of forming boards in urban local bodies. Responding to Gehlot, BJP chief spokesperson Ramlal Sharma alleged that statements by Congress leaders showed the party was divided and its leaders were frustrated. "The Congress is already looking for excuses for its defeat. The BJP will win the civic elections by a large margin," Sharma said, claiming that voters trusted the state government to deliver on its promises. BJP state president Madan Rathore said the party had deployed one campaign chariot in each of Rajasthan's 25 Lok Sabha constituencies to publicise the welfare schemes and achievements of the Union and state governments....
