Bharatpur, Sept. 17 -- Independent councillor Vichitra Singh from Ward 17 and BJP councillor Anuradha Singh from Ward 61 on Wednesday filed their nominations for the post of mayor of Bharatpur Municipal Corporation, setting the stage for a contest amid intense efforts by both camps to secure the support of independents. Vichitra Singh said the Congress was supporting her and expressed confidence that her camp would form the board in the corporation. "My nomination has been filed as an independent, but Congress is with us and we will form the board". Her husband and former mayor Shiv Singh Bhont claimed that his camp had the numbers required to form the board. He said councillors from different parties were in touch with them and that Congress was also supporting their candidate. Bhont further claimed that BJP councillors could cross-vote in favour of Vichitra Singh during the mayoral election. He also alleged that the BJP had kept its councillors in hotels and was not allowing them to meet or communicate with others. Anuradha Singh's name emerged as the BJP's mayoral candidate only a day before the nomination process. She said the BJP had the required majority and that her priority, if elected, would be to undertake development works in the city. Anuradha Singh has been elected councillor for the second consecutive term. Her husband, Hazari Singh, has served as district president of BJP's Yuva Morcha and has been a councillor once. He has been associated with chief minister Bhajan Lal Sharma for a long period. The BJP has emerged as the single largest party in the Bharatpur Municipal Corporation but does not have the numbers required to form the board on its own. Independents won 36 seats, while the BJP secured 20, Congress seven, BSP one and RLP one. The corporation has 65 wards and 33 seats are required for a majority. In neighbouring Dholpur Municipal Council, Congress won 27 of the 60 wards, while BJP secured 11 and independents 19. The numbers have triggered efforts by both parties to secure the support of independents. Dholpur is former CM Vasundhara Raje's hometown. According to insiders, around half a dozen Congress councillors reportedly left the party's camp late on Tuesday. There is speculation that the BJP could seek the support of independents....
