Jaipur, Sept. 7 -- Former Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot on Sunday criticised Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma's roadshows for the ongoing local body elections, saying a chief minister campaigning so aggressively in municipal polls reflected the government's "biggest failure" rather than an achievement. Reacting to a question on Sharma's roadshows, Gehlot said it was worth asking why the chief minister had been forced to campaign in elections to municipalities, municipal councils and municipal corporations. "This is the first time that a chief minister is conducting roadshows in local body elections. This is not a plus point for him but his biggest negative point," Gehlot said. He claimed the government's campaign reflected public anger after two-and-a-half years in office. "Cities are being ruined because of broken roads and poor sewerage systems. There is no development work taking place," he alleged. Gehlot compared the situation with his tenure, recalling the Congress government's "Prashasan Shehron Ke Sang" campaign, which he said had received a positive response. He claimed around 12 lakh leases were issued during his government and questioned the BJP government's performance. "Ask them how many leases they have issued in the last two-and-a-half to three years. They may not have even issued one lakh," he said. Gehlot also questioned the BJP's focus on the local body elections and the presence of ministers and senior party leaders from Delhi, Maharashtra and other states in Rajasthan. He said the mobilisation showed the BJP had realised the extent of public anger and was trying to "mislead" voters. He appealed to voters not to be influenced by the BJP's campaign, saying a defeat in the local body elections would send a strong message to the government and force it to focus on public issues. Gehlot also alleged that corruption had crossed all limits under the present government and development had stalled. "Without paying money, no work is getting done in the government, and development is completely stalled," Gehlot said, adding that people would give their answer through their votes. Responding to the BJP government's comparison of its two-and-a-half-year tenure with the previous Congress government's five-year tenure, Gehlot said voters would make the real assessment. "They can keep comparing their performance with ours, but in a democracy, the people give the final answer," he said.
