Assembly session likely to last 2-3 days
JAIPUR, Aug. 19 -- The Rajasthan Assembly session beginning on Thursday is likely to be brief, with the government considering limiting the proceedings to two or three days amid preparations for the upcoming local body and panchayat elections.
People aware of the matter said the government was considering keeping the session adjourned rather than proroguing it, allowing the Assembly to be reconvened after the local body polls. A short sitting after the elections could then be used to introduce and pass important government legislation.
No final decision has been taken on the duration of the current session. The sixth session of the 16th Rajasthan Legislative Assembly is scheduled to begin on August 20, with an official announcement on its duration awaited.
Despite the possibility of a brief session, the proceedings are expected to be politically charged. The Congress is preparing to raise issues related to school education, law and order and the proposed Uniform Civil Code. The Congress legislature party is likely to meet soon to finalise its strategy and identify issues to be raised during the session. With the Assembly session coinciding with preparations for local body and panchayat elections, both the ruling BJP and the Opposition are expected to use the proceedings to sharpen their political positions.
Meanwhile, an all-party meeting chaired by Assembly Speaker Vasudev Devnani was held on Tuesday ahead of the session. Leaders of the ruling party and the Opposition agreed to ensure that the House functioned in a peaceful and dignified manner.
The parties agreed to uphold the dignity of the House and the Chair and use restrained language during proceedings. Members assured the Speaker that they would raise issues of public interest within the rules.
Devnani said all members would be given adequate time to participate in debates and stressed the need for meaningful discussions on issues concerning the public. He also urged the government to make efforts to address issues raised by the Opposition. Devnani said the Assembly was an important forum for discussing matters of public interest and that maintaining its dignity was the collective responsibility of the treasury and Opposition benches. He urged members to participate in the proceedings with a positive approach.
Leader of Opposition Tika Ram Jully said the Opposition would cooperate in running the House, but the government must take up issues raised in the Assembly seriously....
