Agri min seizes poor groundnut seeds in surprise check in Chomu
Jaipur, May 27 -- Agriculture minister Kirori Lal Meena conducted a surprise inspection at the Silver Park industrial area in Chomu near Jaipur on Tuesday and uncovered what officials described as large-scale illegal packaging of poor-quality groundnut seed.
The raid took place at about 11:30 am at a factory in the RIICO industrial area, where officials found nearly 200,000 sacks filled with whole groundnuts of allegedly inferior quality. The Agriculture Department said the groundnuts were being processed to extract kernels, which were then packed and sold as seed material using machines inside the unit.
During the operation, officials seized thousands of empty packaging bags and packed seed bags. The inspection also identified two unauthorised firms allegedly involved in packing substandard seed.
Meena said the action was part of a wider state-level campaign to protect farmers' interests and crack down on fake and non-standard agricultural products ahead of the sowing season. He said simultaneous inspections and enforcement drives were carried out by Agriculture Department teams in several districts, including Jodhpur, Bikaner, Sikar and Churu.
Officials said the Chomu factory alone held thousands of packed bags labelled as groundnut seed varieties Farmer-510 (RG-510), SG-551 and RG-578. In addition, thousands of empty packaging bags and about 200,000 sacks of whole groundnuts were recovered from the premises.
Investigators found kernels extracted from ordinary groundnuts were allegedly being illegally repackaged and marketed as certified seed products. The raiding team also recovered high-tech machines used for separating kernels from groundnuts and industrial stitching machines used for sealing seed packaging bags.
Agriculture Department officials inspected the premises and scrutinised documents and stock material during the operation.
Meena said the Rajasthan government and the Agriculture Department are committed to ensuring the supply of certified, high-quality and improved seeds to farmers for the upcoming sowing season. The minister said strict action would be taken against the firms involved in accordance with the law....
