Jaipur/Udaipur, Aug. 7 -- The demand for the restoration of student union elections gathered fresh momentum across Rajasthan on Thursday as Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) workers staged coordinated protests at universities in Jaipur, Udaipur, Jodhpur, Sikar, Ajmer and Kota, warning of a statewide agitation against the BJP government if elections are not revived. In Rajasthan University in Jaipur, ABVP workers climbed the university's main gate and attempted to march towards JLN Marg. Police stopped the protesters, leading to a brief scuffle between students and security personnel. Police detained more than 36 students, including ABVP's national university convenor Bharat Bhushan Yadav. ABVP announced that it would launch a statewide movement from Jaipur if the state government failed to restore elections. Addressing protesters, Yadav said student union polls were a long-pending legitimate demand and that students in a democracy should have the right to elect their representatives. "The previous government suppressed the voice of students. After the change in government, students expected the new dispensation to restore elections, but no concrete decision has been taken so far," he said. Tensions also flared at Mohanlal Sukhadia University (MLSU) in Udaipur, where workers of ABVP and the National Students' Union of India (NSUI) came face-to-face during separate protests over the same issue. The confrontation reportedly began after the main gate of the Arts College was closed during the protest. Later, another dispute broke out outside the Vice-Chancellor's office after NSUI workers allegedly objected to the removal of a flag. The verbal exchange soon escalated into a physical confrontation before police reached and brought the situation under control. NSUI student leader Kailash Gurjar said Rajasthan's higher education system was facing multiple challenges, including delayed academic sessions, late declaration of examination results and shortcomings in the evaluation process that were affecting students' futures. At Jai Narain Vyas University in Jodhpur, ABVP workers demonstrated outside the university gate demanding restoration of elections. In Sikar's Shekhawati University, ABVP workers climbed atop the main administrative building and raised slogans. In Ajmer, ABVP workers locked the main gate of Maharshi Dayanand Saraswati University, climbed onto the gate and raised slogans while pressing for restoration of elections and other student demands.
