Jaipur, June 11 -- Jaipur police commissioner Sachin Mittal on Wednesday suspended nine police officers over serious lapses in enforcement that contributed to the fire at an illegal firecracker factory in Jaipur district that killed eight people on Tuesday. Acting on a preliminary inquiry, the commissioner also directed a citywide crackdown on illegal firecracker storage and manufacturing units. Officials said those suspended included Kho Nagorian station house officer Omprakash Matwa, head constable Ashok and constables Ramavatar, Dinesh, Asif, Harendra, and Ashok. Earlier, deputy commissioner of police (east) Ranjita Sharma had announced the suspension of ASI Amar Singh and head constable Pappu Ram. Addressing a press conference in Jaipur, Mittal added that Additional Police Commissioner (Crime) Ajay Singh was assigned the responsibility of a transparent, and comprehensive investigation into the incident. A special inquiry committee has also been formed to examine all aspects of the case, he said, adding that strict action will be taken against those found guilty based on the final report. He has also directed all district police officers to conduct special surveys and inspection drives targeting illegal factories, warehouses, firecracker storage units, and other high-risk establishments. Further instructions have been issued for beat officers and police personnel to carry out door-to-door surveys to identify illegal storage and manufacturing of explosives and firecrackers. The commissioner stressed that preventing recurrence of such incidents is the top priority of the administration. Police said that a detailed probe into the fire was ongoing. They said the net of the probe has widened beyond Rajasthan, with police teams conducting raids in Delhi, Farrukhabad and other locations in search of absconding factory operator Firoz and brothers Yakoob and Qayyum, who owned the building. The brothers lived in Jaipur's Ghatgate area, said an officer, adding that the property had reportedly been rented out to Firoz around six years ago. Police said preliminary investigations have revealed that Firoz allegedly sourced firecrackers and explosive materials from Delhi and brought them to Jaipur for packaging and distribution. Investigators suspect that he was operating more than one illegal unit and had previously faced action at his premises in Delhi. Locals reportedly told police that Firoz and his associate Wasim were allegedly manufacturing and packaging crackers at the site....
