7 patients suffer infections after cataract surgery
Jaipur, July 31 -- Seven people who recently underwent cataract surgeries at the Government Eye Hospital in Kuchaman City were shifted to hospitals in Jaipur and Ajmer after they developed eye infections after the surgeries, officials said on Thursday, adding that they have sealed the operation theatre and ordered a probe into the matter.
Doctors said the patients' condition deteriorated rapidly after the surgeries performed on Wednesday. Within nearly 24 hours, their eyes turned white due to a severe infection. Five critically ill patients were shifted overnight to Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital in Jaipur, while two others were referred to JLN Hospital in Ajmer on Thursday morning, said Kuchaman sub-divisional officer Surendra Chaudhary.
The patients admitted to SMS Hospital have been identified as Ghasiram (65), Hiraram (73), Gokul (70), Meera Devi (68), and Narayani (67). The two patients referred to JLN Hospital are Khemaram (61) and Kanudi (80).
SMS Medical College Principal Dr. Deepak Maheshwari said all seven patients had undergone cataract surgeries on Tuesday at the Kuchaman hospital.
"Considering the seriousness of the situation, we constituted a medical board of senior doctors on Wednesday night itself and immediately began treatment," he said.
Dr. Nagendra Singh Shekhawat, Chairman of the Medical Board and Head of the Ophthalmology Department at SMS Hospital, said the patients were suffering from a post-surgical infection. "All the patients were treated according to standard medical protocols immediately after reaching SMS Hospital," he said.
Meanwhile, a four-member team of doctors from SMS Hospital were sent to Kuchaman to probe the matter. Separately, JLN Medical College has also deputed a five-member team to inspect the operation theatre and probe the matter.
Meanwhile, former CM Ashok Gehlot hit out at the state government over the ,atter. "Patients went to the government hospital for treatment but returned with a new illness," he wrote on X, and also referred to the maternal deaths at government hospitals to press his point....
