Jaipur, Sept. 26 -- Around 7,200 women are set to become sarpanch in Rajasthan as the reservation lottery for sarpanch and ward panch posts in the state's 14,403 gram panchayats were finalised. The lottery, held at sub-divisional headquarters across the state, declared reservation for 14,403 sarpanch posts and 130,584 ward panch posts ahead of the upcoming Panchayati Raj elections. Of the total sarpanch posts, 3,058 have been reserved for Scheduled Tribes (ST), 2,493 for Scheduled Castes (SC) and 1,961 for Other Backward Classes (OBC). Women will account for about 7,200 of sarpanch posts. Among the 130,584 ward panch posts, 21,962 have been reserved for SC candidates, 19,117 for ST candidates and around 15,000 for OBC candidates. Around 65,000 ward panch posts will be for women. The reservation exercise has resulted in all 1,253 sarpanch posts in four districts - Banswara, Dungarpur, Pratapgarh and Salumber - being reserved for Scheduled Tribe candidates. Banswara has 327 sarpanch posts, Dungarpur 442, Salumber 207 and Pratapgarh 277. The concentration of ST-reserved posts in these districts reflects the significant tribal population in the region and will determine the social composition of the leadership of gram panchayats in the four districts. The reservation exercise in Barmer's Panchayat Samiti had to be conducted again after objections were raised over the allocation of SC category to Kapooradi gram panchayat. Local representatives objected to the reservation, stating that the gram panchayat did not have an SC population. The returning officer ordered the reservation lottery for the entire panchayat samiti to be conducted again. The reservation details for sarpanches, ward panches, panchayat samiti members, zila parishad members and pradhans will now be sent to the State Election Commission. The poll schedule is expected to be announced within a few days after the SEC receives and examines the reservation details.
