5 months after ICU blaze, SMS Hospital admin suspends engg
Jaipur, Feb. 27 -- Nearly five months after a fire killed eight ICU patients at Sawai Man Singh Hospital, authorities have suspended the hospital engineer and issued notices to the former superintendent and trauma centre nodal officer over lapses in safety and maintenance.
The action follows a high-level probe that uncovered multiple violations, including flawed ICU design and poor upkeep, highlighting ongoing concerns about fire safety in Rajasthan's largest public hospital amid rising scrutiny of medical infrastructure.
A senior official from the medical education department said, "A high-level committee was formed after the accident that found a slew of negligence by these officials in the maintenance of the hospital. We have submitted this report to the government while the engineer, Mukesh Singhal, was also suspended."
Notices were also issued to former superintendent Sushil Bhati and trauma centre nodal officer Anurag Dhakad.
According to officials, the ICU design did not follow guidelines.
"The ICU had no exit gate and was located at a corner on the second floor which was very difficult to reach from the ground floor," the officer said.
He added that nursing staff fled the spot immediately, while others could not find the key to the main gate. A specific bed in the ICU had also been converted into storage, violating guidelines.
The blaze erupted around 11:20 pm on October 5 night in the neuro ICU ward's storeroom, where papers, medical equipment, and blood sample tubes were kept. Officials suspect a short circuit as the cause....
