4 cops booked for Dalit man's custodial assault
Jaipur, July 5 -- A court has ordered the registration of an FIR against six people, including a station house officer (SHO) and three police officers, for allegedly subjecting a Dalit man to custodial assault and inhumane treatment after he approached a police station to lodge a complaint in Deedwana-Kuchaman district.
The incident dates back to October 2025. Alleging that no action was taken on his repeated complaints, the victim moved an application before the additional chief judicial magistrate (ACJM) court in Kuchaman, which directed police to register the case on Thursday.
According to the FIR, complainant Vijay Kumar Meghwal (28) said that he completed some alluminium work with his brother Baljeet, for Ram Singh and his wife, residents of Lamba village. Vijay alleged that the couple refused to pay his wages and assaulted him on October 13, 2025. When his brother went to Chitawa police station to file a complaint, policemen allegedly drove him out instead of registering an FIR.
The complainant further alleged that on October 14, 2025, he returned to the police station with his parents and brother. Ram Singh and his wife also reached the station. Vijay alleged that, at their instigation, constable Indraj Meena and other policemen dragged him into the lock-up and assaulted him.
According to the complaint, the assault caused a traumatic perforation of his left eardrum, resulting in hearing loss.
The FIR also alleges that the policemen deliberately prevented the complainant from undergoing a timely medical examination. It further states that after Vijay approached the Rajasthan Sampark Portal and senior police officers, the accused allegedly pressured him and his family to withdraw the complaint and enter into a compromise, threatening them with false criminal cases and death if they refused.
Acting on the court's directions, police registered an FIR against the then SHO of Chitawa police station, Tejaram, constable Indraj Meena, policemen Jitendra and Hemram, Ram Singh, his wife, and three to four other unidentified police personnel.
Given the allegations against police personnel, the court directed that the investigation be conducted by an officer from another police station. The probe has been assigned to Makrana deputy SP Vicky Nagpal.
"The investigation is underway. We visited the spot with the complainant on Saturday. The probe will be completed soon," Nagpal told HT....
